Joe’s interest in the psychological changes that accompany the aging process sparked while enrolled in an advanced psychology seminar on cognitive aging at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In the middle of this research intensive course Joe witnessed first hand the physical and psychological deterioration of his grandmother.

Since that moment he has been actively researching psychological aging. As an undergraduate his researched focused on the accurate retention of health information and the variables that contribute to this retention. For this research he received grants from the National Institute of Health and the National Science Foundation and has been first or second author on eight posters presented at regional and national conferences.

Now enrolled in the Clinical and Health Psychology PhD program at the University of Florida with Dr. Christina McCrae as his primary mentor Joe hopes to continue to do research designed to better understand the aging process while expanding his scope of knowledge to more applied principals. His thesis project will examine the unique coupling of change in sleep, cognition, and affect as a result of increased physical fitness in older adults.
