Research Interests

Jennifer’s primary research interest is the effects of music instruction on cognitive abilities. Specifically, she is interested in mitigating the effects of age-related memory loss in older adults. Her research has two directions:

  • Examining the effects of musical instruction on overall executive functioning and cognitive abilities. This research investigates both behavioral and neural correlates of music learning and performance in older adults.
  • Comparing and contrasting cognitive interventions to examine the components of a successful cognitive training program. One specific area of interest is utilizing musical instruction as a form of cognitive training.

Student Profile

Jennifer was inspired by both grandmothers to pursue an academic and research interest in aging. After earning a BA in Music Education, she began teaching elementary students in Orlando while pursuing a master’s degree. She has been awarded the Target Teacher Scholarship and the David Wilmont Prize for Excellence in Music Education. Her coursework in Orlando influenced Jennifer’s decision to study neuromusicology.

Jennifer wrote and facilitated an Evelyn F. McKnight Brain Research Grant entitled, “The Effects of Individualized Piano Instruction on Executive Memory Function in Older Adults (ages 60-85).” She is currently applying for future research funding to expand the project and gain knowledge of diverse research techniques.
